英國皇家園藝學會舉辦全球最醜陋植物選舉，入圍前十名的植物各具「醜」態，這些植物雖然外表醜陋，但不少能夠在惡劣氣候及濕度中生存，證明求生技能較外在美更加重要。民眾可在學會網站投票選出心目中的最醜植物，選舉在本月二十六日截止投票，二十九日公布結果。十大入選植物包括葡萄甕、巨花馬兜鈴、棒棰樹、屍花、百歲蘭、奇怪科萊氏木、Pseudocolus fusiformis、蒼角殿、Raoulia eximia、豬籠草。

是非洲特有的一屬肉質植物。它們屬於夾竹桃科。
棒錘樹屬都是肉質植物，有塊莖及有刺的。它們不會像其他夾竹桃科般分泌奶白色的樹脂。它們的氣孔很明顯。

棒錘樹屬的形態就算是在種內或種與種之間都有很大分別，主要是為適應其生長環境。它們的形態具有高度的靈活性，可以是從基座或冠部分枝出來。其形態主要分為：

扁平短小的物種，高度少於8厘米，但直徑可達40厘米。
壺狀或卵狀的灌木，高4米。
有分枝或沒有分枝，像仙人掌或雪茄的樹，高5米。

百歲蘭（學名：Welwitschia mirabilis）是單種科百歲蘭科百歲蘭屬的唯一品種。又稱為百歲葉、千歲蘭、奇想天外、二葉樹。最早發現於1859年9月3日，由奧地利探險家 Friedrich Martin Joseph Welwitsch 發現於安哥拉的沙漠之中。主要分布在安哥拉與奈米布沙漠。莖短，一生只長兩片葉。雌雄異株。葉上的氣孔會吸收大氣中的水氣，根極長，可達3米至10米，以吸收地下水。經過碳14測試推測其平均壽命可達數百年其中一部分甚至可到2000年，故得此名。 是華盛頓公約（瀕危野生動植物種國際貿易公約）附錄II保護的植物。 由於是裸子植物演化成為被子植物的過渡環節（詳細請參見買麻藤綱），具有高度學術價值。 具有強烈的直根性，主根一但受傷，將非常容易死亡，根又極長，人工栽培十分困難。

型態描述
百歲葉具有兩片極為長壽的葉子，野外植株的葉片通常會碎裂成許多條狀物，讓人無法看出他們原來是兩片葉子。 莖很矮是木質化的，莖的生長點在幼苗時期便死亡，這在植物中是非常罕見的生長習性。 根很長，直根性強烈可以用來吸收地下水，老株會將有機物收集在根的周圍， 可以保護根部不受傷。

Vegetable sheep (Raoulia eximia)
Named because of the way it looks from a distance, this is found in New Zealand's Southern Alps. This shrub forms grey-white mounds and can spread 5ft. Tiny leaves are covered in hairs, with flowers beneath.

A mushroom first reported in Pittsburgh, North America, in 1915. Often found at the edge of woods, in parks and gardens, usually in summer and autumn. The body first resembles a puffball, but later splits to form a stalk with arms that taper.

Corpse flower (Amorphophallus titanium)

This plant only blooms every four to six years within its 40-year life expectancy. The flower is described as the world's largest; reaching 5ft high and 4ft wide. For eight hours of the three-day bloom, the flower emits a smell that is described as rotting flesh, attracting a carrion-eating beetle, for pollination. The plant is also known as an aphrodisiac.

巨花魔芋，又稱屍花，是天南星科魔芋屬的植物。
印尼文名稱叫做「bunga bangkai」， bunga 是「花」的意思， bangkai 是「屍體」的意思，因為巨花魔芋在開花的時候，會散發一股類似屍臭的味道，因此又有「屍花」的別名。在印尼，同樣的名稱也用來稱呼大花草，因為大花草開花時也會散發類似的氣味。大花草和巨花魔芋一樣，原生地都是在印尼的蘇門答臘熱帶雨林裡。

巨花魔芋的花序是世界上最大的花序,可以高達三公尺以上，高度比一個人的身高還高。和斑葉疆南星及馬蹄蓮等同科植物一樣，花序都是佛焰花序，花為單性花，著生在肉質的花序軸上，花序外面由一片類似花瓣的佛焰苞所包圍住。雄花和雌花生長在同一花序上，雌花會先開花，經過一二天後，雄花才會開花，同一植株的雌花和雄花不在同一時間一起開花，是為了防止自花授粉。花序會散發出類似腐肉的味道，這種味道會吸引以腐肉為食的甲蟲及肉蠅科的蠅類來替它授粉。

巨花魔芋會先開花然後再長葉子，當花凋謝後，會由生長在地底的球莖上長出一片葉子，這片葉子很大，可以長到六公尺高，五公尺寬，近似一棵小樹的大小。葉柄綠色似樹幹，在葉柄的頂端會分叉為三個分枝，每個分枝上著生有許多小葉。當生長季結束，地底的球莖儲存到足夠的能量後，老葉會萎凋掉落，球莖進入休眠期，大約會休眠四個月左右。
